What is CBD?

So you have heard of this thing called CBD?

It does lots of things and is being added to almost everything you can think of. There is CBD Chocolate, CBD vapes and CBD beer – everything has CBD in it now and it is pretty easy to find.

So, what is CBD? What does it do? And why should you care? Good Question!

Basically:

Cannabidiol (CBD), is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound that is found in the Cannabis family of plants: mainly Hemp.

It is one of over 120 known phyto-cannabinoids (phyto meaning derived from a plant) which make the cannabis plant so special. It has been associated with a very wide range of well-being outcomes (thanks to its ability to help maintain our Endocannabinoid System).

CBD is a chemical compound which attach to cannabinoid receptors (part of the Endocannabinoid System) and can help to maintain the internal balance within our body (Homeostasis).

There is currently an enormous amount of misinformation about CBD, and quite frankly we’d like to be honest and clear this up .

Cannabidiol Compound Structure

CBD as a Cannabinoid

Believe it or not, CBD is way more complicated than you may assume. It is really important to remember that it is one of hundreds of other beneficial cannabinoids which work to enhance and regulate each other (entourage effect).

Although Cannabis has a very high number of cannabinoids substances like Olives, and Flax seeds also contain similar compounds.

We already synthesise cannabinoids (Endo-cannabinoids) inside our bodies, but these plant-based compounds (phyto-cannabinoids) can support what our body further.

Forms of CBD:

The most confusing aspect of working out what a CBD supplement is the different kinds of cannabis products.

CBD is sold in infused oils, drinks, edibles (such as gummies) or cosmetics. If you have been searching through a lot of products then you will have seen terms like raw CBD, full-spectrum CBD broad-spectrum CBD and Isolated CBD being banded about.

Many confuse these or sadly mis-sell products based on these definitions. This is what we expect from each:

Full-Spectrum CBD: This is a CBD product which contains a wide range of minor cannabinoids including THC. Full-spectrum is always preferred as it is deemed the most effective.

Broad-Spectrum CBD: This is a CBD product which contains a wide range of minor cannabinoids excluding THC. Ideal for those who are sensitive or are not keen on THC.

Isolate CBD: This is a CBD product which contains only a CBD compound. Ideal for targeted doses of the single compound but not deemed as effective as alternatives.

Raw CBD: Raw CBD simply refers to the presence of CBDa, which is the raw CBD compound.

What Does CBD Do?

When understanding what CBD does, you must understand the role of the ‘Endocannabinoid System‘. This can be found in all of us, and was discovered when scientists tried to understand why the cannabis plant made us ‘high’; thus this system was named after the plant which lead to its discovery.

The ECS is part of our body’s ability to continue to exist- it regulates a perfect balance called Homeostasis. This process helps our bodies internal environment to remain stable while there are external changes.

Homeostasis impacts many essential bodily functions and ensures that our bodies are working properly. So by supporting the ECS there can be a significant improvement your general well being.

It is worth pointing out however, that we are all different and our ECS’s work differently from person to person; the variables being age, weight, diet, metabolism and any health issues you may have. What one person experiences, is different to another. It is always advised to start small, and increase the dose as you go.
