You need to get your head around Lion’s Mane mushroom; what it is, what are it’s reported benefits and which Lion’s Mane supplements contain all of the great bioactive ingredients.

This page is almost completely dedicated to this powerful Mushroom. A mushroom that is reported to improve focus, memory and protect your brain from degeneration.

Let’s find more about this amazing mushroom.

What is Lion's Mane?

Lion’s Mane is a fungi that is found growing on hardwoods in wet-land forests across Northern Europe, and Asia.

They are very easy to identify and do look a lot like they cannot be eaten. The mushroom’s name comes from it’s appearance, as it looks very similar to a Lion’s Mane.

While it is possible to come across one here in the UK, the mushroom was traditionally used in India, China, Japan and other regions across Asia as a natural remedy to lethargy and lack of focus.

Benefits of Lion's Mane Mushroom

There are many benefits associated with the mushroom, but the three which have been studied and backed by science are: Improved cognitive health, better gut health and reduction in oxidative stress.

Lion’s Mane is said to have enormous benefits for cognitive function, working memory, and neuro-regenerative and protective potential [source].

This is down to the main active compounds Hericenones and Erinacines, which have undergone extensive study and found to be part of helping our brain grow, recover and improve.

While the studies into the Lion’s Mane mushrooms are still in their infancy, we know that they are really great for our cognitive health. Mushrooms have been used in Chinese medicine for decades and contain a number of compounds which are essential for our brain to develop neurons and new pathways- in short, helping to boost our brain power and warn off degenerative brain conditions.

There is some evidence to suggest that Lion’s Mane has a protective effect on our gut [source]. More research is needed to be conclusive, but anecdotal evidence certainly does seem to point towards a happier tummy. The benefits of good gut health are wide-reaching, from more energy to better digestion and improved immunity.

Lion’s Mane supplements and food sources are legal in the UK, but there is some clarity needed.

It seems that it is illegal to harvest or grow Lions Mane in the UK. The reason is more likely to do with conservation than it is any other reason.

There are very rare occasions where Lion’s Mane will have negative side effects. While rare, you should always consume them with caution.

The biggest risk factor is having an allergic reaction, so if you are sensitive to Mushrooms generally, avoid Lion’s Mane.

Other side effects are nausea, diarrhoea and digestion discomfort.
